New Standards and Quality Assurance System for Respirators in Japan Government standards for dust respirators and gas masks of Japan have been revised this year, better complying with the standards of the EU and the US. The important changes are (1) the criteria and the test methods of particle filtration efficiency of dust respirators, (2) new classification of gas masks which are combined with dust filters and (3) newly introduction of the test of carbon dioxide concentration in inhalation.

National certification tests had been performed by the National Institute of Industrial Health for the past 40 years. But the certification tests based on the new standards have started by the Technology Institution of Industrial Safety from November 2000. The quality surveillance system of respirators for industrial uses in the market has also started this year as the government policy.
