Overview of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standards Development Activities |
CSA International is an independent, not-for-profit organization supported by more than 8,000 members. We have a network of offices, partners, and strategic alliances in Canada, the U.S., and around the world. Established in 1919, CSA International is a leader in the field of standards development and the application of these standards through product certification, management system registration, and information products. CSA’s purpose is “to make standards work for people and business.” Our Standards provide safety or performance requirements for products and services. Today, we have published over 1,500 standards in nine major program fields. CSA has more than 1,000 standard development committees. CSA standards are written and updated by volunteer committee members representing the groups (e.g. manufacturers, industry associations, government, employer, labor, etc.) most affected by a particular standard. Each committee has balanced representation to ensure that no one group can dominate. Committee members work to obtain substantial agreement-a consensus of expert opinions-on the standards content. CSA also offers seminars and publishes handbooks/guidelines that help users understand and apply standards. This presentation will provide a brief update on the status of our respiratory protection standards, CAN/CSA-Z94.4 Selection, Use and Care of Respirators and CSA Z180.1 Compressed Breathing Air and Systems. |
