How to Deal with RPE within a Global Petrochemical Industry

A global Petrochemical industry like The Dow Chemical Company, is strongly relaying on the correct RPE programs implementation, because engineering and administrative controls are not always feasible.

To have one global approach, and prevent re-inventing the wheel at local level, a new global RPE standard was developed last couple of years.

The process for selection, maintenance, and use of RPE is included in the following Dow Global RPE Requirements: Hazard Assessment, Personal Exposure Assessment, Exposure Limits, Secondary Exposure Control Methods, Hazard Communication, Selection of RPE, Requirements for SCBA and Air line Breathing Apparatus, Medical Approval, Fit Testing, Training, Documentation and Recordkeeping, and Compliance Verification by Self Assessment and Auditing

The Standard summarizes the requirements for RPE. It is intended to assist with the implementation of these requirements / regulations and serves as well as a reference for questions that may arise. Some requirements of the Standard are more stringent than International Governmental requirements while others local requirements are implemented into the Standard.

Sites within The Dow Chemical Company shall follow the Standard requirements, to create a program that will be specific for their Site. Utilization of the Standard, along with recommended model practices, will implement local requirements and ensure compliance.
